Edited on 11/04/13 with some latest imputs:
West Bengal Finance Minister Dr. Amit Mitra & Panchayet Minister Subrata Mukherjee was heckled and manhandled by Left activists outside the planning commission office in the heart of New Delhi today(9th April, 2013) and later Dr. Mitra admitted to AIIMS-Delhi. Mamata Banerjee, who was with them also physically hackled & now under observation of Doctors. Later admitted at a Nursing Home at Kolkata on 10/04/13.. The Bengal Chief Minister Mamata says angrily "They are hooligans...This is dirty politics."
Later, addressing the media, she said "They had an iron rod, tried to hit me with it... They can kill me but they cannot stop me."
"You know why they are protesting. I have 10 lakh people with me. I can bring them to Delhi. They don't want development of West Bengal," she said.
Ms Banerjee is in Delhi today to ask the Centre for financial help for her state which is deeply in debt due to long misrule by CPM & Lefts. And now CPM & SFI those don’t want development of Bengal attacked them which is very unfortunate. She was expected to meet the Prime Minister this evening but as she fallen sick this meeting is cancelled.
Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee and Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim also faced the ire of these goons.
The hooligans of SFI heckled Mitra whose kurta was torn in the melee. SFI's so called students also tried to do "PICKPOCKET".. & some old & middle aged men/women are also was there under the banner of SFI(see the picture).. Are they student??
West Bengal Governor M K Narayanan has strongly condemned the "attack" on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her ministers in Delhi last evening, calling it a "premeditated assault" and "blot on India's cherished democratic values". Mr Narayanan has also demanded that the CPI(M) should apologies for the attack.
The protest followed the death of Students Federation of India leader Sudipta Gupta in Kolkata April 2.
Police in Kolkata & postmortem report confirmed that the young man was unfortunately killed when his head struck an electric post while being taken in a bus by police. Still Mamata ordered probe & she visited dead leader in hospital within 20Hrs of incident; whereas in past no CM from Bengal ever visited victim opposition leader/activist.
A stunned Dr Mitra, 62, was at a loss for words as he described how women activists attacked him with sticks used to beat drums and pointed to where his kurta was torn. The minister said his attackers even attempted to take his wallet away..
Mr Mitra and Ms Banerjee were entering Yojana Bhawan, which houses the planning commission office to meet the panel's chief Montek Singh Ahluwalia, when the Student Federation of India (SFI) goons surrounded Mr Mitra, shouting angrily and pushing him.
It is a fault of Congressi government of Delhi also as they were unable to protect a CM & other Ministers of State.
Policemen deployed at Yojana Bhawan did not come to Mr Mitra's aid as he was heckled. The police later said that about 100 protesters had been allowed to gather but not at the gate that the Bengal leaders were to use. The Trinamool Congress (TMC), they said, is yet to lodge a police complaint and no arrests have been made so far.
