Son of Kamada Kinkar Mukherjee and Rajlakshmi Mukherjee, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, born on 11th December, 1935 in a small village, Mirati (Near Kirnahar) of Birbhum District in West Bengal. Pranab’s father Kamada K Mukherjee was a respected freedom fighter plus an active member of Indian National Congress & Member of West Bengal Legislative Council from 1952 to 1964.

He attended the Suri Vidyasagar College, Suri (Birbhum), then affiliated with the University of Calcutta. He passed double M.A one in History, another is political science .After that he passed LL.B . He attended the Suri Vidyasagar College, Suri (Birbhum), and then affiliated with the University of Calcutta. He married Suvra Mukherjee on July 13, 1957 and has two sons and a daughter.
Mukherjee began his professional career as an upper-division clerk in the office of the Deputy Accountant-General (Post and Telegraph) in Calcutta before he became a college-teacher and later a journalist. He worked for noted Bengali publication Desher Dak (Call of Motherland).
Mukherjee was chairman of the Indian Statistical Institute in Kolkata. He is also the former chairman and president of the Rabindra Bharati University and the Nikhil Bharat Banga Sahitya Sammelan. Mukherjee is a former trustee of the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad and the Bidhan Memorial Trust. Mukherjee used to be on the Planning Board of the Asiatic Society.
Shri Pranab Mukherjee’s parliamentary career begun as a Rajya Sabha member from Congress Party in 1969. Thereafter, he re-elected in 1975, 1981, 1993, and 1999. His ministerial career begun in 1973 as the Deputy Minister, Industrial Development. After that he hardly looked back. When he was the Finance Minister of India during 1982 to 1984, Euromoney Magazine rated him as the best Finance Minister of the world. Thereafter, barring a brief period, Shri Mukherjee, served the country as a cabinet Minister, more or less in every National Congress Ministry. Before becoming President he was served the External Affairs Minister then Finance Minister of Dr.Manmohan Singh’s cabinet and as a senior member of the Ministry, he was consulted by the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh before taking any major decision regarding welfare of the country and his valuable comments and suggestions made him practically indispensable.
In political life he was the Member, Congress Working Committee (the highest policy making body of Indian National Congress) from 27th January, 1978 to 18th January, 1986 and again from 10th August, 1997 till June’2012.
Pranab Mukherjee began his political career with the Indian National Congress in 1969 under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. He became one of her top lieutenants and was often described as her "man for all seasons". His rise was meteoric in the early phase of his career and he became a cabinet minister in Indira Gandhi's government in 1973.

Pranab babu’s hobbies are Reading books , listening music , diary maintaining , gardening. He is generally vegetarian but also take non–veg food specially Bengali Fish Carry occasionally.
